Working with horses is all about the dialogue between you and the animal. My training is based on trust, reliable communication and body language. My job as a trainer is to ask questions of the horse using a language that they can understand. Horses are experts in body language - they just don't always know that we can use this language too! Once we have formed this connection and started a conversation I can introduce the cues that mean we want certain behaviours. This can be as simple as teaching a horse to follow the rein or move away from pressure, to skills like parking themselves at a mounting block to allow us to get on, to become curious and brave jumping or even higher level dressage moves like piaffe and passage . I also believe it is essential we teach our horses how to navigate through everyday environmental pressures, training them to self-manage stressful situations by adopting a physical posture that promotes relaxation. My passion is providing an education for horses so that they can have a long, healthy, and very importantly, happy and relaxed career as a riding horse. Horses with challenging behaviour are often the most rewarding to work with, we can help them find their way back to a place of peace and enjoyment in riding and handling. I also love to train young performance horses - making sure they have a really well rounded education so that they can be successful in their discipline. I make sure we develop the fundamentals first - horses need to learn to walk, stand, catch, come, go, turn, mount easily, and get used to scary objects before they progress in their mounted training. A horse in tension is never able to work at their best!
